Update 29 September - Save South Fulham Businesses petition hand-in!
On Friday 29 September, Greg and Councillor Jose Afonso handed in their petition with Hammersmith & Fulham Conservative Councillors to seek compensation for Wandsworth Bridge Road & SW6 businesses adversely affected by the closure of Wandsworth Bridge.
Greg would like to thank each of the 1,105 residents who took the time to sign the petition!
Greg and Councillors called for the fastest repair possible and have kept the pressure on over the weeks. Greg is pleased to report to residents that Wandsworth Bridge finally reopens this weekend!
Nonetheless, local Labour-run Councils have a lot to answer for, as unfortunately, a number of businesses have closed or been damaged in recent weeks.
- Update ends
Greg shares concerns with many residents from across Fulham and Chelsea about the closure of Wandsworth Bridge.
The 10-week full closure by Wandsworth Council will be a hammer blow to residents, who are already swamped with diverted and displaced traffic from the closure of Hammersmith Bridge and dealing with the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham’s (LBHF) controversial SW6 Traffic Scheme.
Now that we are faced with the closure of Wandsworth Bridge - it is a triple whammy of grief for Fulham and Chelsea constituents!
Regarding the closure of Wandsworth Bridge, Greg has taken urgent action on behalf of concerned residents. Greg has written to Wandsworth Council about the closure and written to Transport for London about the impact this closure will have on public transport, and specifically changes to bus routes. However, Greg’s action does not stop there.
Following the announcement of the closure of Wandsworth Bridge, Greg and Hammersmith & Fulham Conservative Councillors are campaigning to Save South Fulham Businesses. Their plan has three parts:
- Support Local Businesses through an emergency rebate
- Ensure Wandsworth Council deliver as fast a repair as possible
- Suspend the SW6 Traffic Scheme
Support Local Businesses
Local businesses are the lifeblood of our community. We are calling on Wandsworth Council to provide funding for a business rates rebate to remedy the damage this closure will cause.
Faster Repairs
We call on Labour-run Wandsworth Council to carry out as rapid a repair as possible, including 24/7 works and more staff. As a major arterial route, the longer Wandsworth Bridge is closed, the longer both our communities suffer. We are gravely concerned that there is no specific end date for the works and demand the Council provides one.
Suspend the SW6 Traffic Scheme
While the Scheme to the West is still in its trial, we call on Labour-run LBHF to suspend the SW6 Traffic Scheme so those from outside the Borough can continue to access our shops and are not discouraged from visiting our local business and residents.
It is time for urgent action from both Wandsworth Council and Hammersmith & Fulham Council.
